Going Within

December 2000
New Moon in Capricorn, Sun Eclipse!

We have passed the pivot point which turns the planet back towards the light, even as darkness seems to wrap around the earth more tightly. This is the season of the North, a time for honoring silence, death, and the physical body. This moon we will focus on the importance of delving deeply into the wisdom of the body.

Since the advent of mirrors, we are all more or less in touch with our outward, physical appearance. Some people barely give their own appearance a second thought, while others obsess about their own and others physical covering: too fat or too thin; hair the wrong color, or too curly, or too straight; skin that is wrinkling, or too light, or too dark, or not quite right in some way. We can physically see our outer shell, and so this captures our attention, especially when we are surrounded by advertising and agreements that tell us what physical beauty is, and how important it is to have it.

And yet what of the internal body, the organs and blood and bones that keep the physical body alive? Rarely do we think about our internal temple unless something goes wrong, and even then we are often reluctant to listen to the body, believing that it has failed us in some way.

If this physical body is a temple for the soul, then in order to help the soul progress, we must understand for ourselves the functioning of our internal, physical self. We know that the physical and the spiritual are linked, but how many of us have taken the time to explore the body, from the inside out, and how it manifests the soul?

Obviously, we have each learned something about the needs of our physical bodies. We know our bodies need food and water, and a certain amount of sleep, and to be kept warm. How much more would you know about your own body if you set your intent to listen deeply to it, and to begin to practice paying as much attention to the inside organs and bones and muscles as the most people pay to the outside?

Make the commitment to yourself this season to direct your vision inward, not just to your spirit, but to the temple that carries it. The wisdom of the universe lies within your cells, and the keys to your own happiness within your body. Making energetic contact with your physical body will help to unlock the secrets of the emotional and spiritual self.
