I first
experienced shamanic healing circles in my study with Vicki Noble,
creator of the MotherPeace tarot deck. Forty women with drums rattles,
and open hearts, and three women with cancer. No expectations, no
agendas, simply our presence and willingness to be vehicles for
the healing of spirit. On the second floor of an Oakland house,
we would drum, dance, touch, pray. The room would fill with light
as we became channels, moving out of our own way to let the power
of healing move through us.
Shamanic
healing circles are created by intent and love. I recommend chanting
and grounding as a group before any healing circle, to help bring
the group into harmony and still the inside world. Make a connection
with the earth, opening to allow the vitality of the earth’s radiance
to flow through. After setting intent for the circle, drums, rattles
and other instruments help to create the energy and keep it moving,
and quiet the mind.
Once the
energy begins to flow, there is no difference between the healer
and the healee: each of us becomes both healer and healed. Place
those you want to focus on in the center of the circle, and allow
people to take turns placing hands on. Let go of any healing practices
you know; let the mystery come through by being absolutely in the
present moment. Keep a chant and the drumming going for at least
a 1/2 hour. As you become comfortable holding more energy, you can
lengthen your healing circles. Keep your body moving!
The energy
of healing circles tends to go in waves, sometimes sweet and soft,
other times rising to a crescendo of voices and drumming before
it dips down again. Use all of the stages of rhythm and magic. When
the cycle is complete, make sure to ground by placing your hands
on the earth and releasing any extra energy with thanks.
